It’s getting Steamy in here and you’ve been ready since I

As many of us use the Steam service for the majority of our PC gaming needs, I found the newest feature quite interesting. The recent update allows users to remotely install new or old games in their steam library onto their PC from a web browser or the Steam apps available for iOS and android. In other...

It’s hard to know when it’s a good time to start in on a new comic so to help you out I have listed some jumping on points I have found from personal reads and around the internet. If you are looking to add a little flavor this week but don’t want to heavily invest in trades consider picking one of these up. If you know of something I missed from either 7/4 or the other three previous weeks, hit me up in the comments. If you need to know what the title or character has been up to previously then I highly suggest hitting the wiki over at Comic Vine.

Another slow week outside of DC’s zero issues so I decided to dedicate another jumping on point fully to DC. There were four this week that I couldn’t find enough information on but I hit, what I think at least, are all of the major ones and then some. The ones not covered are Legion Lost, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad and The Ravagers. Let’s go take a quick look at the rest and how they stack up as a jumping on point.

I didn’t find any real jumping on points outside of the DC zero issues for jumping on points this week. If you don’t know the concept of DC’s #0′s this month it was intended to highlight the five year gap from Flashpoint to New 52 for each book. Below is a quick assessment of each #0′s released on September 5th and their viability as a jumping on point. The only exceptions are G.I. Combat, Stormwatch, and Worlds Finest, which I couldn’t find enough information on.

Amazing Spider-Man #692

This oversized issue is the 50th anniversary issue of everyone’s favorite wise cracking wallcrawler. There are three separate stories in this issue. The first part kicks off a new arc and is an introduction of a new superhero. I try to avoid spoilers so I’ll just say after reading it I have my trepidations with this new arc. The second story was a throw back to the classic Spider-Man No More! story and the third and final story is best described as Spider-Man’s bad day. Personally, I don’t think this comic is worth the $5.99 price tag and all three stories seemed a little trite. As for the future of Spider-Man, there is no word on what the Marvel is planning for Spider-Man come Marvel Now! The current writer, Dan Slott, is at least staying on up to issue #700 which should come out in December.

Daredevil #17

Out of all the comics I read, Mark Waid’s run on Daredevil has been consistently new reader friendly. This issue of Daredevil is a special one shot that delves into the history Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson. Also, if you haven’t been reading Daredevil, it will help set up the upcoming four issue arc. This issue came about when artist Mike Allred (MadmaniZOMBIEwrote a fan letter stating how much he loved the current Daredevil and wanted to draw an issue. He was taken up on that offer and this is the result.

Batwoman #12

Batwoman bucks the trend of not starting a new arc before September’s #0 issues and thankfully gives me another jumping on point to talk about. This issue starts a team up arc with Batwoman and Wonder Woman. I’ve constantly heard good things about both titles but personally there is only so much bat I want to take on at once. I do think the cover of this issue is amazing.

It looks to be some lean weeks ahead for this column when it coming from the the big two. On DC’s end the one-off zero issues will be rolling out come September and with the Marvel Now! initiative restarting many titles in October there won’t be many recommendations coming from that publisher either. I always look out for jumping on points from the smaller publishers as well but in terms of volume one of the big twos weekly comics is typically more than the smaller ones combined. There is at least one very big jumping on point from DC this week though so without further ado…

Over the past few weeks Marvel has been slowly teasing the new direction of the Marvel universe post Avengers vs. X-Men. They have dubbed it Marvel NOW! and have explicitly stated that it isn’t a reboot rather a shaking up of the creative teams on many of Marvel core titles. It will slowly be rolling out from October to February so if you have been wanting to get back in to some of the iconic Marvel characters fresh beginnings are around the corner. Marvel teased the teams for eight titles last week and there is a great article over at Comic Book Movie that gives a quick rundown of all the teasers released so far.

Before I get into this weeks jumping on points I would like to point out that the spidery theme to this week is totally unintentional. On the other hand I would like to say that, in my opinion, thwipt is the greatest onomatopoeia known to man. Now, on to the good stuff.

Unfortunately I only found two books to report on this week but I did finally get around to picking up Scarlet Spider #7 over the weekend. I liked it so much that I’ll be adding it to my pull list and I’m going to get the trade of the first six issues when it comes out August 22nd. The artwork and story were really good and the fact that it’s set in Houston Texas gives it a sense that is Kaine truly on his own.

I feel the most endearing part of this book is how much of a regular guy Kane feels like. He doesn’t have the access to the gadgets or superhero contacts of Peter Parker. He didn’t grow up with Uncle Ben as a role model or the guilt associated with his death to push him to be a good person. If you don’t know Kains history he was a villain due to circumstance and the Scarlet Spider books follow his path of new beginnings and redemption. He isn’t an anti-hero in the sense of the Punisher, rather, he aspires to follow the straight and narrow like Peter Parker but doesn’t always get there. Doing the right thing doesn’t always come naturally and that’s what makes Kaine a more approachable hero in my opinion. Don’t let the suit or the fact that he is a clone fool you. He is definitely a different person than Peter Parker, and I was able to see that after one issue. It’s really a fun book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes superhero books.

On to this weeks jumping on points.

Wonder Woman #11

This has been one of the critical darlings of the New 52. Since the titles relaunch Wonder Woman has stopped mucking about in the mortal affairs of the rest of the DCU and has focused on the more mythological side. It’s good to see that the writers are taking a new direction with a tent pole character and sticking to their guns. It’s the kind of thing I had hoped they would have done with Superman. I was teased by the first four Action Comics but it went downhill quick.

Scarlet Spider #7

I’ve been hearing good things about Scarlet Spider and after looking up reviews on this issue I may have to jump in myself. Of course, that’s the danger I put myself into every week writing this article. For those of you not in the know; Scarlet Spider is the former clone nemesis of Peter Parker who is known as Kaine. In a long, somewhat complicated and convoluted storyline spanning many decades Kaine was recently cured from being spider-sh*t crazy. He now resides in Huston, Texas trying to make is own mark away from his “brother” Peter. In this issue the duo of Khoi Pham and Tom Palmer talk over on art duty. I liked the work they did in Daredevil and their styles definitely fit a spider book.

I don’t know if it was just a fluke or because it was Fourth of July but this was a bit of a disappointing week for jumping on points. I had to do a bit of digging to find three and the only major title that had a clear start point still has the caveat of being a tie in from Avengers vs. X-men. Speaking of that summer event: Marvel has released some information on the shake ups that will happen after Avengers vs. X-Men. They are calling it Marvel NOW! It looks like post AvX might be a good time to jump on board with some X-Men and Avengers books. Personally, I’m excited to see what Johnathan Hickman does to the Avengers because his work with Fantastic Four was… fantastic. OK, enough about the future, lets talk about the past…
