If you are looking to add a little flavor this week but don’t want to heavily invest in trades consider picking one...

Into Darkness

I recently found an article talking about something J.J. Abrams did for a Star Trek fan for Christmas. A very heartfelt story. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/02/jj-abrams-star-trek-fan-dying-wish-upcoming-sequel_n_2397746.html

Sorry It’s been a while since any new posts, but real life gets in the way sometimes.

Anyway, Here is the teaser for the new Star Trek film Star Trek: Into Darkness. This looks as intense as J.J.  Abrams first Star Trek film. As dark as Wrath of Khan?? Well now I’m in the mood to watch the first one. This one is out May 17th 2013.

It’s very interesting how this movie about a young William Adama fighting in the first Cylon war is being released. Machinima Prime is carrying it in small pieces each week prior to a full movie release on Syfy. Episode one is out today and looks to have the same level of production as the show did. I will take more Battlestar Galactica fiction however I can get it. Enjoy

I have been waiting for this for a long time. I know the making of this film has hit some rough patches that prevented it from being out this year but, it looks quite intense. The novel World War Z by Max Brooks is one of the most definitive source materials for zombie fiction of any type. The swarming zombies that seem to move at an unreal level of speed may be something to worry about but, that type of creature worked well in 28 Days Later. Just watch the trailer to see for yourself.

Here we go. The beginning of the media maelstrom which a movie from Marvel brings. A new villain for Iron Man. But, more importantly, a very different Iron Man. Could be just what Iron Man needed. I found Iron Man 2 a bit disappointing. Especially the ending.

Warning: I will be making a generalization about each of the three movies out this weeks as to the target demographic:

One for the Guys = ‘Looper‘ starring Joseph Gordon-Levit, Bruce Willis & Emily Blunt. A science-fiction/Mob movie starring Bruce Willis. Yup, aimed at the more testosterone filled among us. Set in a time when thirty years in the future, time travel has been invented. But, it only works backwards. Levit plays a “Looper” – a hit-man who is waiting for those the Mob wants dead to apear in the past. Chaos ensues when the next victim is himself from 30 years in the future. I hope the story and direction are great because I’m not sure I can get past Levit looking like a young Bruce Willis. Weird.

One for the Kids = ‘Hotel Transylvania‘ featuring the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Kevin James and Selena Gomez. The first trailer I saw showed Dracula getting pestered about a clogged toilet clogged by an abominable snowman. I know my kids love that type of humor. Hotel Transylvania: a place where monsters can just be themselves. But it can all be undone by a regular human (Jonathan) who wants to hang out with Dracula and ends up falling in love with Mavis (Dracula’s daughter). Looks like fun with the kids, but, I will probably wait till closer to Halloween.

Learned a few things from this video.

1. I too miss the theme songs from old TV shows.

2. I should watch more Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

3. I might have to give the new comedy “Guys With Kids

This week looks much better than last weeks meager choices. A sci-fi reboot, Police thriller, a horror movie involving (gasp)…a house, and feel good sports movie.

First off is ‘Dredd‘ starring Karl Urban & Olivia Thirby in the reboot of The Judge Dredd franchise. This looks Ok and has got to be better than the 1995 ‘Judge Dredd’ staring Sylvester Stallone. I posted about this movie a while back and my opinion still stands. I’ll be waiting this one out but will probably watch it at some point.

Second is ‘End of Watch‘ directed by David Ayer. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Penne as two Los Angeles police officers who end up involved in some intense situations as seen through the view of handheld cameras which personalize the action. This looks gripping as Ayer also wrote the screenplay for ‘Training Day‘.

Ok only two movies are out this week for wide release. Finding Nemo 3D and Resident Evil Retribution 3D.So we have an amazing classic that many of us with children have seen 20-30 times and a predictable action movie from a series I have relegated to rental/streaming territory. If I had to pick one it would be Nemo, but only if I take my 5 year old son. I know, I know, Mila Jovavich is attractive and kicks undead ass as Alice. But, there are better movies I haven’t watched yet on Netflix. I have an idea! Make a movie using the names of both titles. Resident Nemo (a film about the early days of Captain Nemo, reinventing him as a young Dr. that learns to love the ocean). Finding Retribution (probably already a crappy action/revenge film). Ah, whatever. Not a great week for new releases. Here is the trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution. I don’t think anyone needs one for Finding Nemo.

Yeah, I am definitely ready for some more Walking Dead. Here a couple interesting versions of the theme I just came across. I really should play the game too.

Enjoy!
